Advice for Foreign Visitors to the Crown Territory of Transylvania

Despite the scurrilous reports you may have read in certain foreign newspapers, the Crown Territory of Transylvania is not the most dangerous destination on the European continent. The overwhelming majority of visits are completed safely, and travellers who exercise ordinary prudence can expect to enjoy a pleasant and memorable stay.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs nevertheless recommends that all visitors observe the following precautions, particularly when travelling beyond the larger towns and cities.

I. General Advice
  • Sunset Curfew: Avoid unnecessary travel after sunset. Tollgates, river crossings, and municipal post-houses are locked strictly at dusk by order of the Prefect.
  • Travel Directives: Remain on recognised roads wherever possible. Do not enter forests or mountain passes without the assistance of a licensed local guide.
  • Mounts & Draft Animals: Keep horses well rested. Animals have been known to detect certain dangers before their riders become aware of them. Should mounts display unexplained agitation or refuse to approach a tree line, do not force them forward.
  • Local Intelligence: Should local residents or parish constables advise that a particular road, bridge, or village is “best avoided,” their advice should not be dismissed lightly.

II. Personal Safety & Hospitality

  • Exercise caution when accepting private lodging in isolated frontier districts. Ensure guest quarters feature internal iron bolts and intact, reinforced shutters.
  • Do not accept overnight hospitality from persons who decline to partake of the evening meal with their guests, or whose residences remain entirely shuttered during daylight hours.
  • If your host’s residence contains no mirrors, or if you are denied access to certain subterranean rooms, excuse yourself courteously and leave at the earliest opportunity.
  • Should you hear persistent scratching, tapping, or vocal mimicry at an upper-floor window or roof tile during the hours of darkness, do not unlatch the shutters. Remain quiet until dawn.
  • Never enter abandoned churches, monasteries, or crypts without local guidance or official Ministry clearance.
  • Report unexplained disappearances or unburied corpses promptly to the nearest constable or Ministry office.
III. Known Hazards
  • Travellers should be aware that wolves, bears, highwaymen, and other nocturnal predators continue to present an occasional hazard in remote districts.
  • The activities of outlawed nosferatu — officially classified as unlicensed nocturnal vectors — continue to present an intermittent threat in certain frontier districts. While incidents remain infrequent in comparison with other causes of violent death, travellers are advised to exercise appropriate caution after nightfall and when accepting overnight accommodation in isolated communities.
  • Information leading to the identification, containment, or destruction of active vectors remains eligible for financial reward under the provisions of Royal Decree XXVII.
  • Persons in possession of reliable information should present themselves to the nearest Ministry office or contact a licensed Inquisitorial Warden without delay.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs wishes all foreign guests a safe, orderly, and enjoyable stay in the Kingdom of Transylvania.
